A Place on the Bookshelf: Writing, Marketing, and Reading in Blended Genres
Genre serves as a useful guide for writers, readers, publishers, and booksellers. But what happens when the story you want to tell crosses these boundaries? Blending different genres together can be invigorating and also tricky. Ms. Murphy will discuss the challenges and benefits of writing and marketing a genre-bending novel, as well as mentioning some of her favorite books that don’t have an obvious place on the bookshelf.
About Sara Flannery Murphy
Sara Flannery Murphy was born in Little Rock, Arkansas. While she was growing up, her family divided their time between Little Rock and Eureka Springs, Arkansas. In Eureka Springs, Murphy had the chance to take writing and drama classes.
She attended University of Arkansas at Little Rock, where she majored in English. She worked at the Fletcher Library. After graduation, Murphy moved to St. Louis, Missouri, receiving an MFA in Creative Writing from Washington University in St. Louis.
She’s also spent time in Vancouver, where she earned an MLIS from University of British Columbia.
The Possessions is Ms. Murphy’s first novel. The novel was an official Book of the Month Club pick and has been highlighted as a best book of the week by People Magazine. Rights to the novel have been sold in five languages. Her other writing has appeared in LitHub, Storyglossia, and Tammy.
Currently, Ms. Murphy lives in Stillwater, Oklahoma, with her husband and son. She is hard at work on her second novel.
